Electrotherapy

What is electrotherapy?

Electrotherapy is a type of physical therapy that uses various kinds of electrical currents. It serves to restore muscles, reduce inflammation of muscles and tendons, improve circulation and reduce pain. We achieve the best results in combination with kinesitherapy and other physical therapies.

The injuries electrotherapy is most often used for:

Sports injuries
Sprains and dislocations
Ligament injuries
Arthritis and arthrosis

The currents that are applied affect circulation and dilate the blood vessels, which promotes recovery and tissue healing. This therapy is not painful. A brief tingling and a sensation of muscle vibration may be felt.

Types of electrotherapy

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is a method of treating pain symptoms by stimulating the sensory nerve endings in the skin. It helps reduce acute and chronic pain.
Diadynamic currents are direct pulsed currents. The therapeutic effect of these currents is analgesia (pain reduction), improved tissue trophism and reduced edema (swelling reduction). Indications for diadynamic currents include: neuralgia, migraine, myofascial syndrome, periarthritis of the shoulder and hip, lumbar and cervical syndrome.
Interference currents are alternating currents created by crossing two medium-frequency currents. They increase blood and lymph circulation, which improves tissue trophism and promotes the resorption of edema. They reduce pain, promote bone healing and the regeneration of peripheral nerves.
Electrical stimulation consists of electrically stimulating the peripheral motor nerves to induce muscle contraction. Electrical stimulation is used as a substitution method to induce deficient movements and improve muscle function and strength.

What an electrotherapy treatment looks like

The physiotherapist applies therapeutic electrodes to the painful and injured parts of the body, usually using between two and six electrodes, depending on the area that requires treatment. The device is then activated, setting the appropriate therapeutic frequencies and amplitudes. The patient usually feels pleasant sensations and tingling rather than discomfort or pain. Improvement, reduced pain and swelling are noticed after just a few treatments.
