Pool Therapy in Belgrade

Pool therapy is a form of rehabilitation in which exercises are performed in warm water, which reduces the load on the joints and makes movement easier. At Dynamic Fizio in Dorcol, we use hydrokinesitherapy as part of an individual recovery program tailored to each patient's condition and goals. Warm water acts on the muscles, joints and nervous system at the same time, so pool rehabilitation often produces faster results than working on dry land, especially in the early stages of recovery.

Benefits of pool therapy

The main advantage of water is buoyancy, which reduces body weight and relieves the spine and the joints of the legs. When the body is submerged to the waist, the load on the joints drops to about half, and at chest level to only a third of body weight. Thanks to this, the patient can move the joint and strengthen the muscles without the pain that the same movement would cause on dry land.

Warm water, usually between 32 and 34 degrees, relaxes the muscles and reduces spasm, while hydrostatic pressure helps reduce swelling and improves circulation. At the same time, the resistance of the water acts as a gentle, controlled load for strengthening the muscles. Exercises in water are also safer for people with poor balance, because the water slows a fall and reduces the risk of injury.

Who it is for

Hydrotherapy is suitable for recovery after hip, knee and spine surgery, after joint replacement, as well as after fractures once gradual loading is allowed. It is also recommended for chronic back pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatic diseases, and for neurological conditions where movement and balance need to be retrained.

Exercises in water are also used by athletes returning to activity, as well as by people who are overweight and for whom working on dry land is painful or exhausting. An assessment is carried out before joining the program, because pool therapy is not suitable for open wounds, acute infections, severe heart disease and uncontrolled epilepsy.

What pool therapy looks like

Every program begins with an examination and assessment by a physiotherapist, who sets the goals and selects exercises according to the diagnosis. Pool therapy is carried out under the supervision of a therapist, individually or in a small group, and a session usually lasts 30 to 45 minutes. Aids such as floats, bands and balls are also used to change resistance and support in the water.

The program is adjusted over time to the patient's progress, and hydrokinesitherapy is most often combined with kinesitherapy on dry land and other forms of physical therapy for a faster recovery.
